Hay que quitar la palabra “serves”
The 40th President of the United States, unprompted, said: “Life is one grand, sweet song, so start the music.” Whether or not Ronald Reagan set foot in Sabaneta La Vega, DR isn’t a matter of public record. There is however, documented proof that Geraldo De La Cruz, known professionally as DJ Lalo, pressed play in that town some twenty-eight years ago. The 2010 US Census will count DJ Lalo exactly once in its records, skipping over the rich notes and woven harmonies of his life experience. But you, dear reader, are beckoned to imbibe such details, tones struck in the same rapid tempo as our lives’.
It was Lalo’s move to New York at age 13 that awoke the passion for music he’s felt since. Long known as the mecca of DJing and birthplace of hip-hop, “The City that Never Sleeps” provided Lalo with more than enough mixed-format music. One twiddle of a radio knob exposed the young man’s ears to the likes of legendary latin DJs Johnny Famolari and Alex Sensation. Mixshows such as these and remix compilations like Jesus Citronelle’s “To Mixeao” led the teenage music lover to the next natural progression: becoming a disc jockey. The hobby of DJing transitioned into something more ambitious; putting on CDs for family functions became DJing parties for friends and their associates. Then, the pasttime grew entrepreneurial: a 2002 move to Worcester, MA served to garner DJ Lalo accolades in the city’s latin community and his reputation as a private party DJ heightened. Lalo’s then-loose association with fellow DJs solidified into a now-formal brotherhood, Lo Maximo Productions. The #1 latin DJ organization in the world impulses Lalo’s every bound forward.
DJing for groups in catering halls and community centers is one thing. Commanding the attention of a nightclub full of veteran partiers is a distinct task. A challenge more formal still: disc jockeying on the airwaves. DJ Lalo has since accumulated a formidable listing of accomplishments throughout the Northeast US (Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, New York), listed for your perusal.
