Displaying humility...putting family first...maintaining loyalty...many claim to keep these qualities and priorities. While some hold fast to their ethics and morals, others falter, losing their identity in the process. DJ Negrito's trip through memory lane reveals him to be a shining example of the former. In fact, it was Negrito's grandfather who inspired him to be a DJ...and Negrito's mother who gave him his stage name.
At the tender age of five, DJ Negrito saw his grandfather playing bachata, a musical genre filled with the rich heritage and emotion of the Dominican people. Like all children who emulate their elders, it was only a matter of time before Negrito stood behind the sound rig himself. Six years later and 1500 miles away, Negrito marveled at the technique employed by radio jocks on Hot97 and LatinoMix [now X96.3]. His interest for DJing piqued, 11-year old Negrito obtained what he now calls "cheap equipment". His brother helped carry the heavy gear up and down staircase after staircase, and party to party. Then at 14, Negrito did what every DJ remembers fondly: he made his first recorded mix. One merengue mix birthed countless other musical projects spanning the traditional latin genres (salsa, merengue, bachata, etc.), many of which found their way on to LatinoRemix.com. It wasn't long before Negrito outgrew his bedroom and took on a one year residency at a lounge. Sure, he was 15, but with his older looks and growing talent, he was quickly hired and kept on board.
Much like a hermit crab, DJ Negrito shed the lounge in search of something bigger. With nightclubs and massive crowds in close grasp, Negrito experienced life in classic form, and became a proud father, albeit at 16. Ever the family man, he put his passion on hold and took responsibility, pursuing higher education and placing DJing on the back burner. But it wasn't long after that opportunity knocked in the form of known club promoter DJ Electro, and a 17-year old Negrito put JetSet as the first of many clubs on his resume. It was also around this time that Negrito's relationship with LatinoRemix.com grew more professional. The rest as they say, is history.
DJ Negrito has been a member of Lo Maximo Productions (LatinoRemix.com's new incarnation) for seven years and has headlined venues throughout the Northeast US. He describes DJing not as a hobby, but something more serious, something requiring time to hew out an individual style. Currently, he accepts club bookings and dedicates time to private parties and mixtapes. To sum up his own experience, success and peaks and valleys with one quote, Negrito says: "Stay true to yourself, no matter what. Hard and difficult work pays off."
